What do loft conversion skylights involve?
Our loft conversion skylights service in Oxfordshire covers roof windows planned for loft rooms — light, headroom and escape. We survey every job before fixing the price.
Orangery-style extensions with lanterns are popular across the South East, and solar-control glass makes a big difference on south-facing gardens. Larger gardens in much of the South East mean deeper rear extensions, and deeper rooms need light from above rather than only from the doors.

Planning and building rules in England
In England a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development under Class C if it projects no more than 150 mm beyond the roof slope and sits no higher than the ridge. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
Building Regulations Approved Document L sets a limiting U-value of 2.2 W/m²K for new or replacement rooflights in existing homes, measured in the horizontal plane; roof windows need 1.4 W/m²K or a Band B energy rating. In an extension, glazing including rooflights is normally limited to 25% of the new floor area plus any windows or doors the extension covers, unless a whole-house calculation shows otherwise.

How the job runs
- Tell us about the roof. Send the postcode, rough sizes and a photo or two through the form, WhatsApp or the guide-price tool.
- Free survey. For new installations a surveyor measures the opening, checks the roof build-up and talks through glass and options.
- Fixed written quote. You get the product, the work and the price in writing. Nothing is ordered or paid for until you agree.
- Fitting and handover. We fit, seal and make good, then hand over product data, warranties and any certificate paperwork.

Common questions
How many roof windows does a loft room need?
Enough to give good light — a common rule of thumb is glazing equal to roughly a tenth to a fifth of the floor area, adjusted for orientation and use. We advise at survey.
Can you work alongside my loft builder?
Yes — we set out and fit the windows to the builder's programme.
Top-hung or centre-pivot in a loft?
Top-hung gives a clearer view and often suits escape use; centre-pivot is easier to clean and suits higher positions.
Will the loft be cold near the windows?
Correctly fitted insulation collars and linings keep the window surround warm and reduce condensation.
Do you fit loft conversion skylights across Oxfordshire?
Yes. We survey and fit loft conversion skylights across Oxfordshire, including Oxford, Banbury, Abingdon.
