What are ridge & pitched glass roofs?

Our ridge & pitched glass roofs service in Gloucestershire covers dual-pitch glazed roofs for side returns, links and long extensions. We survey every job before fixing the price.

Stone cottages, slate roofs and conservation areas are common in the South West, and conservation-profile rooflights keep the roofline quiet. Many South West towns mix Georgian and Victorian terraces with modern estates, so the right product differs street by street.

Planning and building rules in England

In England a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development under Class C if it projects no more than 150 mm beyond the roof slope and sits no higher than the ridge. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.

For English homes the energy rules ask for rooflights of 2.2 W/m²K or better and roof windows of 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B); most modern double glazed units meet both. In an extension, glazing including rooflights is normally limited to 25% of the new floor area plus any windows or doors the extension covers, unless a whole-house calculation shows otherwise.

  3. Fixed written quote. You get the product, the work and the price in writing. Nothing is ordered or paid for until you agree.
  4. Fitting and handover. We fit, seal and make good, then hand over product data, warranties and any certificate paperwork.

Common questions

Can it have opening vents?

Yes, top-hung vents with electric actuators are common, often with a rain sensor.

Is a glass roof too hot for a kitchen?

Without care, it can be. Solar-control glass, an opening vent at the top and a blind make a south-facing glass roof comfortable.

Can it be partly solid?

Yes — part-glazed, part-insulated roofs balance light and heat.

Will it be noisy in the rain?

Glass is quieter than polycarbonate. Triple glazing or laminated glass reduces rain noise further.

Will I need planning permission in Gloucestershire?

English householder permitted development (Class C) normally covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof plane and stay below the highest part of the roof.
