Roof lanterns in Argyll and Bute: the essentials
Our roof lanterns service in Argyll and Bute covers hipped glass lanterns that lift the ceiling of orangeries and extensions. We survey every job before fixing the price.
Many Scottish homes have dormers and attic rooms where an extra roof window adds light without a full dormer. Scottish weather is hard on roofs, so we specify rooflights and roof windows with exposure in mind and fit upstands with generous heights.

Planning and building rules in Scotland
Scottish householder permitted development (Class 2B, other external alterations) can cover a rooflight that projects no more than 1 metre from the roof, but the right does not apply in conservation areas. Listed buildings need listed building consent where the work affects their character.
Under the Scottish building standards, replacement rooflights should average 1.6 W/m²K or better, and no individual unit should exceed 3.3 W/m²K. Forming a new opening normally involves structural work, so check with the local authority verifier whether a building warrant is needed.

Common questions
How big can a lantern be?
Aluminium systems go to around three by six metres in standard ranges; larger sizes are made to order.
Do roof lanterns get hot?
They can in summer if clear glass is used on a south-facing roof. Solar-control glass and an opening vent make a big difference.
Roof lantern or flat rooflight?
A lantern adds height and sky from all sides; a flat rooflight is lower-profile and cleaner from outside. Our guide compares them in detail.
Do they leak?
Modern lanterns are sealed systems. Leaks usually trace back to the kerb or roof membrane detail, which we form and check ourselves.
Do you fit roof lanterns across Argyll and Bute?
Yes, in most places. We survey and fit roof lanterns across Argyll and Bute, including Dunoon, Helensburgh, Lochgilphead. Campbeltown, Oban, Rothesay are by arrangement.
