Loft conversion skylights in Lichfield: what is involved?
For Lichfield homes and buildings we offer loft conversion skylights: roof windows planned for loft rooms — light, headroom and escape. We measure first, specify to the opening and confirm any planning or building-control points before quoting.
Midlands housing is a mix of Victorian terraces, inter-war semis and newer estates, and rear kitchen extensions with flat rooflights are a common upgrade. Typical uses for loft conversion skylights include loft conversions and rooms in the roof.
We work across Staffordshire, including Lichfield, and in neighbouring towns such as Burntwood and Tamworth. Access, parking and how the glass reaches the roof are all checked at the survey.

Consents for loft conversion skylights in Lichfield
English householder permitted development (Class C) normally covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof plane and stay below the highest part of the roof. Listed buildings need listed building consent, flats have no householder permitted development rights, and an Article 4 direction can remove the rights in some conservation areas.
Building Regulations Approved Document L sets a limiting U-value of 2.2 W/m²K for new or replacement rooflights in existing homes, measured in the horizontal plane; roof windows need 1.4 W/m²K or a Band B energy rating. The Future Homes and Buildings Standards, published in March 2026, apply from 24 March 2027 and keep the 2.2 W/m²K limit for rooflights.
See our building regulations guide for U-values, glazing limits and self-certification.

Questions about loft conversion skylights in Lichfield
Can you work alongside my loft builder?
Yes — we set out and fit the windows to the builder's programme.
Top-hung or centre-pivot in a loft?
Top-hung gives a clearer view and often suits escape use; centre-pivot is easier to clean and suits higher positions.
Will the loft be cold near the windows?
Correctly fitted insulation collars and linings keep the window surround warm and reduce condensation.
Will I need planning permission in Lichfield?
Most rooflights on English houses do not need planning permission, provided they keep within 150 mm of the roof surface and below the ridge line.
Is the survey in Lichfield free?
Yes for new installations. Repair visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we book.
