What are ridge & pitched glass roofs?

Across South Yorkshire, our ridge & pitched glass roofs work covers dual-pitch glazed roofs for side returns, links and long extensions. Survey first, fixed price second, fitting third.

Many Yorkshire homes have had kitchen extensions with flat roofs, where a larger glass rooflight is a straightforward upgrade from an old dome. Conservation areas and stone villages across Yorkshire often call for conservation rooflights in slate or stone-slate roofs.

Planning and building rules in England

In England a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development under Class C if it projects no more than 150 mm beyond the roof slope and sits no higher than the ridge. Listed buildings need listed building consent, flats have no householder permitted development rights, and an Article 4 direction can remove the rights in some conservation areas.

For English homes the energy rules ask for rooflights of 2.2 W/m²K or better and roof windows of 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B); most modern double glazed units meet both. The Future Homes and Buildings Standards, published in March 2026, apply from 24 March 2027 and keep the 2.2 W/m²K limit for rooflights.

How the job runs

  1. Tell us about the roof. Send the postcode, rough sizes and a photo or two through the form, WhatsApp or the guide-price tool.
  2. Free survey. For new installations a surveyor measures the opening, checks the roof build-up and talks through glass and options.
  3. Fixed written quote. You get the product, the work and the price in writing. Nothing is ordered or paid for until you agree.
  4. Fitting and handover. We fit, seal and make good, then hand over product data, warranties and any certificate paperwork.

Common questions

How long does a ridge roof take to fit?

Typically two to four days once the walls and supports are ready, depending on length and access.

Can it have opening vents?

Yes, top-hung vents with electric actuators are common, often with a rain sensor.

Do I need a party wall agreement?

If the work affects a party wall or boundary, the Party Wall etc. Act 1996 may apply in England and Wales. We flag this at survey so you can serve notice in time.

Can it be partly solid?

Yes — part-glazed, part-insulated roofs balance light and heat.

Will I need planning permission in South Yorkshire?

English householder permitted development (Class C) normally covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof plane and stay below the highest part of the roof.
