Rooflight upstands & kerbs in Hackney: what is involved?
For Hackney homes and buildings we offer rooflight upstands & kerbs: insulated kerbs built and waterproofed to suit your rooflight. We measure first, specify to the opening and confirm any planning or building-control points before quoting.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces with narrow side returns are typical of much of London, and a glass roof or long flat rooflight is the usual way to keep the back rooms bright once the return is built over. Typical uses for rooflight upstands & kerbs include roofs where the old kerb is low, cold or leaking.
Neighbouring towns include Bow (3 km) and Stratford (3 km). We offer a survey date when we reply to your enquiry.
What you can choose
- Raised upstands for deep green or ballasted roofs
- Timber upstands with insulation
- Upstands to suit single-ply, felt, GRP or liquid roofs
- Upstand repairs and rebuilds
- Proprietary insulated kerbs
- Matched to your roof covering
- Insulated to avoid a cold bridge
Before you order: points to check
- Minimum upstand height is set by the rooflight manufacturer — commonly 150 mm above the finished roof
- Upstand size must match the unit within a tight tolerance
Planning, building control and Hackney
In England a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development under Class C if it projects no more than 150 mm beyond the roof slope and sits no higher than the ridge. Listed buildings need listed building consent, flats have no householder permitted development rights, and an Article 4 direction can remove the rights in some conservation areas.
Under Approved Document L, a rooflight added to an English home must achieve at least 2.2 W/m²K (horizontal plane), and a roof window 1.4 W/m²K or Window Energy Rating Band B. In an extension, glazing including rooflights is normally limited to 25% of the new floor area plus any windows or doors the extension covers, unless a whole-house calculation shows otherwise.

Rooflight upstands & kerbs in Hackney: questions
Can I build the upstand myself?
Your builder can, to our drawing. We check it before the rooflight is fitted, because the unit must sit square and level.
Why is my rooflight cold around the edge?
Usually an uninsulated upstand. Insulating the kerb and lining the reveal fixes most cold spots.
What roof coverings do you work with?
Single-ply, EPDM, felt, GRP and liquid-applied systems — or we coordinate with your roofer.
Do you offer rooflight upstands & kerbs in Hackney?
Yes. We carry out rooflight upstands & kerbs in Hackney and across Greater London. Send your postcode and we will offer a survey date when we reply.
Can you work alongside my builder in Hackney?
Yes. On new extensions we fit once the opening and upstand are ready and coordinate dates with your builder.
