Rooflight upstands & kerbs for Swansea: the essentials
Our rooflight upstands & kerbs service in Swansea covers insulated kerbs built and waterproofed to suit your rooflight. Every job starts with a survey of the opening, the roof covering and the room below, and a fixed written price.
Many Welsh homes have older single-storey rear extensions where a glass rooflight brightens a dark kitchen. Rooflight upstands & kerbs suit roofs where the old kerb is low, cold or leaking.
We cover all of Swansea and the SA1 district, and nearby Briton Ferry and Gorseinon.
Choices for your Swansea project
- Internal plaster-box linings
- Raised upstands for deep green or ballasted roofs
- Proprietary insulated kerbs
- Timber upstands with insulation
- Upstand repairs and rebuilds
- Membrane dressed up and sealed
- Matched to your roof covering
Things we check at survey
- Upstand size must match the unit within a tight tolerance
- Minimum upstand height is set by the rooflight manufacturer — commonly 150 mm above the finished roof
Planning, building control and Swansea
Welsh householder permitted development (Class C) allows rooflights that project no more than 15 cm and sit no higher than the existing roof — but not in conservation areas, National Parks, AONBs or World Heritage Sites. Listed buildings need listed building consent from the council, and flats have no householder permitted development rights.
Approved Document L in Wales (2022 edition) sets 2.2 W/m²K for rooflights, measured horizontally, and 1.4 W/m²K or Band B for roof windows in existing homes. A revised Welsh Approved Document L takes effect on 4 March 2027; rooflights in new dwellings stay at 2.2 W/m²K.
See our building regulations guide for U-values, glazing limits and self-certification.

Rooflight upstands & kerbs in Swansea: questions
What roof coverings do you work with?
Single-ply, EPDM, felt, GRP and liquid-applied systems — or we coordinate with your roofer.
Can I build the upstand myself?
Your builder can, to our drawing. We check it before the rooflight is fitted, because the unit must sit square and level.
Why is my rooflight cold around the edge?
Usually an uninsulated upstand. Insulating the kerb and lining the reveal fixes most cold spots.

Yes. We carry out rooflight upstands & kerbs in Swansea and across West Glamorgan. Send your postcode and we will offer a survey date when we reply.
Is the survey in Swansea free?
Yes for new installations. Repair visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we book.
