What do walk-on rooflights involve?
Across Cambridgeshire, our walk-on rooflights work covers structural glass you can stand on, set flush into terraces and floors. Survey first, fixed price second, fitting third.
Many homes in the East have low-pitched roofs on later extensions, which are better served by flat rooflights than pitched roof windows. Coastal towns in the East of England see salty air, so we specify frame finishes and fixings with exposure in mind.

Planning and building rules in England
In England a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development under Class C if it projects no more than 150 mm beyond the roof slope and sits no higher than the ridge. Listed buildings need listed building consent, flats have no householder permitted development rights, and an Article 4 direction can remove the rights in some conservation areas.
Under Approved Document L, a rooflight added to an English home must achieve at least 2.2 W/m²K (horizontal plane), and a roof window 1.4 W/m²K or Window Energy Rating Band B. Replacing a rooflight or roof window can be self-certified by an installer registered with an authorised competent person scheme; otherwise building control approval is needed.

Common questions
Will it sit flush with my paving?
Yes — the unit is set on its own upstand so the glass finishes level with the surrounding paving or decking.
Does it need a structural engineer?
Often, yes. Where the unit sits on new or altered structure, an engineer confirms the support and the manufacturer confirms the glass.
How much weight can a walk-on rooflight take?
It depends on the model and size. Manufacturers state a design imposed load for each unit; we only specify a unit whose rating suits the use, such as a private terrace or a busier area.
Can it be used inside the house?
Yes. Internal walk-on panels pass light from an upper floor or ground floor to a basement below.
Do you fit walk-on rooflights across Cambridgeshire?
Yes. We survey and fit walk-on rooflights across Cambridgeshire, including Peterborough, Cambridge, Wisbech.
