What are walk-on rooflights?
Walk-on rooflights in Cumbria means structural glass you can stand on, set flush into terraces and floors. Every quote follows a survey of the roof and the room below.
Stone and brick terraces are typical across the North West, and roof windows in rear slopes are a common way to light attic rooms. Exposed hillside towns in the North West need flashing and seal details that cope with wind-driven rain.

Planning and building rules in England
Most rooflights on English houses do not need planning permission, provided they keep within 150 mm of the roof surface and below the ridge line. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
Building Regulations Approved Document L sets a limiting U-value of 2.2 W/m²K for new or replacement rooflights in existing homes, measured in the horizontal plane; roof windows need 1.4 W/m²K or a Band B energy rating. The Future Homes and Buildings Standards, published in March 2026, apply from 24 March 2027 and keep the 2.2 W/m²K limit for rooflights.
What do walk-on rooflights cost in Cumbria?
These are typical supply-and-fit ranges. For an address in Cumbria, scaffold, a hoist for heavy glass, or a new structural opening can move the figure, which is why we survey first.

- Tell us about the roof. Send the postcode, rough sizes and a photo or two through the form, WhatsApp or the guide-price tool.
- Free survey. For new installations a surveyor measures the opening, checks the roof build-up and talks through glass and options.
- Fixed written quote. You get the product, the work and the price in writing. Nothing is ordered or paid for until you agree.
- Fitting and handover. We fit, seal and make good, then hand over product data, warranties and any certificate paperwork.

Common questions
Can you see through it?
Clear glass can be seen through from both sides. A privacy interlayer or patterned frit keeps the light while obscuring the view.
Will it sit flush with my paving?
Yes — the unit is set on its own upstand so the glass finishes level with the surrounding paving or decking.
How much weight can a walk-on rooflight take?
It depends on the model and size. Manufacturers state a design imposed load for each unit; we only specify a unit whose rating suits the use, such as a private terrace or a busier area.
Can it be used inside the house?
Yes. Internal walk-on panels pass light from an upper floor or ground floor to a basement below.
Do you fit walk-on rooflights across Cumbria?
Yes. We survey and fit walk-on rooflights across Cumbria, including Carlisle, Barrow-in-Furness, Kendal.
