Skylights and rooflights across Cumbria
We survey, supply and fit skylights and rooflights across Cumbria, including Carlisle, Barrow-in-Furness and Kendal.
Rear kitchen extensions on North West semis often have small domes from decades ago that leak or have yellowed.
Exposed hillside towns in the North West need flashing and seal details that cope with wind-driven rain.

Planning and building rules in England
Most rooflights on English houses do not need planning permission, provided they keep within 150 mm of the roof surface and below the ridge line. Listed buildings need listed building consent, flats have no householder permitted development rights, and an Article 4 direction can remove the rights in some conservation areas.
Under Approved Document L, a rooflight added to an English home must achieve at least 2.2 W/m²K (horizontal plane), and a roof window 1.4 W/m²K or Window Energy Rating Band B. Replacing a rooflight or roof window can be self-certified by an installer registered with an authorised competent person scheme; otherwise building control approval is needed.

Common questions
Do you cover all of Cumbria?
Yes. We survey and fit across Cumbria, including Carlisle, Barrow-in-Furness and Kendal. Remote and island addresses are by arrangement.
Do I need planning permission for a rooflight in Cumbria?
English householder permitted development (Class C) normally covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof plane and stay below the highest part of the roof.
Fixed or opening?
Opening units suit kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms; fixed units are simpler and cheaper where the room already ventilates well.
Is the survey free?
Yes, for new installations. Repair and maintenance visits are charged, and we tell you the visit price first.
Do I need planning permission?
Usually not for a rooflight on a house within the permitted development limits. Rules differ by nation: flats are not covered, listed buildings need listed building consent, and in Wales, Scotland and NI a rooflight in a conservation area needs permission. See our planning guide.
