Skylights and rooflights across Tyne and Wear

SkylightCompany.uk covers the whole of Tyne and Wear — homes, extensions, schools and commercial roofs — with a free survey for new installations.

North East terraces and colliery-town housing often have rear offshoots where a rooflight brightens a narrow kitchen.

Many North East homes have loft rooms that benefit from larger roof windows with blackout blinds.

Planning and building rules in England

Most rooflights on English houses do not need planning permission, provided they keep within 150 mm of the roof surface and below the ridge line. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.

Under Approved Document L, a rooflight added to an English home must achieve at least 2.2 W/m²K (horizontal plane), and a roof window 1.4 W/m²K or Window Energy Rating Band B. In an extension, glazing including rooflights is normally limited to 25% of the new floor area plus any windows or doors the extension covers, unless a whole-house calculation shows otherwise.

Common questions

Do you cover all of Tyne and Wear?

Yes. We survey and fit across Tyne and Wear, including Newcastle upon Tyne, Sunderland and South Shields. Remote and island addresses are by arrangement.

Do I need planning permission for a rooflight in Tyne and Wear?

Most rooflights on English houses do not need planning permission, provided they keep within 150 mm of the roof surface and below the ridge line.

Will a rooflight make my room too hot?

It can on a south-facing roof with clear glass. Solar-control glass, an opening unit and a blind keep the room comfortable.

Can I cancel?

Made-to-measure products are excluded from the statutory 14-day cancellation right, but you can cancel without charge until we place the order with the manufacturer. Our terms explain the rest.

Are you accredited?

We do not display trade-body logos unless a membership is held and current. Product certifications belong to the manufacturers and we provide their documents.
