Sun tunnels & tubular skylights in Tyne and Wear: the essentials
Our sun tunnels & tubular skylights service in Tyne and Wear covers light pipes that bring daylight to halls and bathrooms with no window. We survey every job before fixing the price.
Stone villages inland in the North East can have conservation areas where low-profile rooflights are preferred. Coastal exposure along the North East means we look closely at frame finishes and seals.

Planning and building rules in England
English householder permitted development (Class C) normally covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof plane and stay below the highest part of the roof. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
Under Approved Document L, a rooflight added to an English home must achieve at least 2.2 W/m²K (horizontal plane), and a roof window 1.4 W/m²K or Window Energy Rating Band B. In an extension, glazing including rooflights is normally limited to 25% of the new floor area plus any windows or doors the extension covers, unless a whole-house calculation shows otherwise.

Common questions
How much light does a sun tunnel give?
A good rigid tunnel on a bright day lights a hallway well. Output depends on tube diameter, length and the number of bends.
Can it work at night?
Some models include a light fitting in the diffuser.
Can it go through a flat roof?
Yes, with a flat-roof flashing and upstand.
Rigid or flexible tube?
Rigid tubes carry much more light. Flexible tubes are easier where the loft is cluttered, but lose light faster.
Do I need to be at home for the survey in Tyne and Wear?
Yes — someone needs to let us into the room below and, where possible, show us how the roof is reached.
