What do walk-on rooflights involve?
Our walk-on rooflights service in the East Riding of Yorkshire covers structural glass you can stand on, set flush into terraces and floors. We survey every job before fixing the price.
Exposed Pennine and coastal towns in Yorkshire need upstand and flashing details built for wind-driven rain. Stone-built terraces are common across Yorkshire, and roof windows in the rear slope are a popular way to light attic rooms.

Planning and building rules in England
English householder permitted development (Class C) normally covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof plane and stay below the highest part of the roof. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
For English homes the energy rules ask for rooflights of 2.2 W/m²K or better and roof windows of 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B); most modern double glazed units meet both. In an extension, glazing including rooflights is normally limited to 25% of the new floor area plus any windows or doors the extension covers, unless a whole-house calculation shows otherwise.

Common questions
Is the glass slippery?
Walk-on glass has an anti-slip finish, usually a ceramic frit or etched pattern. Like any outdoor surface it needs cleaning to stay effective.
Does it need a structural engineer?
Often, yes. Where the unit sits on new or altered structure, an engineer confirms the support and the manufacturer confirms the glass.
How much weight can a walk-on rooflight take?
It depends on the model and size. Manufacturers state a design imposed load for each unit; we only specify a unit whose rating suits the use, such as a private terrace or a busier area.
Can it be used inside the house?
Yes. Internal walk-on panels pass light from an upper floor or ground floor to a basement below.
Do you fit walk-on rooflights across the East Riding of Yorkshire?
Yes. We survey and fit walk-on rooflights across the East Riding of Yorkshire, including Hull, Bridlington, Beverley.
