Skylights and rooflights in Winchester

We survey, supply and fit skylights and rooflights in Winchester and the SO23 district — flat rooflights, roof lanterns, roof windows, walk-on glass, sun tunnels and commercial rooflights.

Many South East homes have been extended more than once, and an old dome over an earlier extension is often due for replacement.

We work across Hampshire, including Winchester, and in neighbouring towns such as Eastleigh and Southampton. Access, parking and how the glass reaches the roof are all checked at the survey.

Planning and building rules in England

In England a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development under Class C if it projects no more than 150 mm beyond the roof slope and sits no higher than the ridge. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.

Under Approved Document L, a rooflight added to an English home must achieve at least 2.2 W/m²K (horizontal plane), and a roof window 1.4 W/m²K or Window Energy Rating Band B. The Future Homes and Buildings Standards, published in March 2026, apply from 24 March 2027 and keep the 2.2 W/m²K limit for rooflights.

Skylight questions: Winchester

How do I book a survey in Winchester?

Send your postcode and, if you can, a photo of the roof and the room. We offer a survey date when we reply.

Will I need planning permission in Winchester?

English householder permitted development (Class C) normally covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof plane and stay below the highest part of the roof.

Can you work alongside my builder in Winchester?

Yes. On new extensions we fit once the opening and upstand are ready and coordinate dates with your builder.

Do you fit skylights and rooflights in Winchester?

Yes. We survey and fit skylights and rooflights in Winchester and across Hampshire. Send your postcode and we will offer a survey date when we reply.

Will a rooflight make my room too hot?

It can on a south-facing roof with clear glass. Solar-control glass, an opening unit and a blind keep the room comfortable.

Fixed or opening?

Opening units suit kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms; fixed units are simpler and cheaper where the room already ventilates well.
