Skylight replacement for Winchester: the essentials
Skylight replacement in Winchester means replacing tired domes and failed glass with a modern rooflight. We cover the SO23 district and the rest of Hampshire, with a survey before any price is fixed.
Many South East homes have been extended more than once, and an old dome over an earlier extension is often due for replacement. In Winchester, as anywhere, skylight replacement is the usual choice for yellowed domes, misted glass and leaking roof windows.
Jobs in Winchester are planned around access: whether the roof can be reached from the garden, whether a hoist or crane is needed, and where we can park. We check this when we measure.
What you can choose
- Roof window replacement in pitched roofs
- Like-for-like size replacement
- Misted glass unit replacement only
- Dome to flat glass upgrade
- Fixed to electric opening
- Usually done in a day
- Often reuses the existing opening
Things we check at survey
- Upstand and roof condition decide the scope
- Enlarging the opening changes the structure and may need approval
Do you need permission in Winchester?
English householder permitted development (Class C) normally covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof plane and stay below the highest part of the roof. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
Building Regulations Approved Document L sets a limiting U-value of 2.2 W/m²K for new or replacement rooflights in existing homes, measured in the horizontal plane; roof windows need 1.4 W/m²K or a Band B energy rating. In an extension, glazing including rooflights is normally limited to 25% of the new floor area plus any windows or doors the extension covers, unless a whole-house calculation shows otherwise.
