Skylight installation in Winchester: what is involved?
Our skylight installation service in Winchester covers survey, supply and fit — new openings, extensions and fit-only work. Every job starts with a survey of the opening, the roof covering and the room below, and a fixed written price.
Many South East homes have been extended more than once, and an old dome over an earlier extension is often due for replacement. Typical uses for skylight installation include new extensions, new openings and fit-only jobs.
Neighbouring towns include Eastleigh (11 km) and Southampton (19 km). We offer a survey date when we reply to your enquiry.

Consents for skylight installation in Winchester
In England a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development under Class C if it projects no more than 150 mm beyond the roof slope and sits no higher than the ridge. Listed buildings need listed building consent, flats have no householder permitted development rights, and an Article 4 direction can remove the rights in some conservation areas.
For English homes the energy rules ask for rooflights of 2.2 W/m²K or better and roof windows of 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B); most modern double glazed units meet both. Replacing a rooflight or roof window can be self-certified by an installer registered with an authorised competent person scheme; otherwise building control approval is needed.
See our building regulations guide for U-values, glazing limits and self-certification.

Common questions
Do I need a structural engineer?
For new openings that cut joists or rafters, a structural check is sensible and building control may ask for calculations.
How long does installation take?
Fitting into a prepared upstand takes about a day. A new opening in an existing roof, including making good, often takes two to three days.
Who handles building control?
We tell you which route applies — building control approval, a building warrant in Scotland, or in England and Wales self-certification by a registered competent person — and supply the product data.
Is the survey in Winchester free?
Yes for new installations. Repair visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we book.
Do you offer skylight installation in Winchester?
Yes. We carry out skylight installation in Winchester and across Hampshire. Send your postcode and we will offer a survey date when we reply.
