Rooflight glass explained: double, triple, solar control and safety

Most rooflights use a toughened outer pane and a laminated inner pane so that, if the glass ever breaks, it stays in place overhead. Triple glazing improves insulation and cuts rain noise; solar-control coatings reduce overheating; self-cleaning coatings help on low-pitch glass.

Why is the inner pane laminated?

Laminated glass holds together if it breaks, which matters for glass overhead. Toughened glass is stronger but breaks into small pieces.

Double or triple?

Triple glazing gives a lower U-value and noticeably quieter rain. It is heavier and costs more, so it is worth it over bedrooms, in exposed areas, or where an energy calculation is tight.

What does solar-control glass do?

It reflects part of the sun's heat while letting most visible light through. On south and west-facing roofs it can make the difference between a comfortable room and an oven.

Is self-cleaning glass worth it?

It helps rain wash dirt off, but flat glass with little fall still needs occasional cleaning.
