Walk-on rooflights: load ratings, safety and costs

A walk-on rooflight is a structural glass panel designed and tested to carry a stated foot-traffic load, with a laminated anti-slip top pane, set flush into a terrace or floor. It must be specified for the actual use and supported as the manufacturer or an engineer requires.

What load can a walk-on rooflight take?

Each product has a design imposed load set by the manufacturer for its size and glass make-up. A private roof terrace needs a lower rating than a busy public area. We only specify a unit whose stated rating suits the use.

Is non-fragile the same as walk-on?

No. Non-fragile means a roof light should not give way if someone stumbles onto it during maintenance — it is a safety classification, not permission to walk on it. Only units designed for foot traffic should be used as floors.

How does anti-slip glass work?

A ceramic frit or etched pattern on the top surface gives grip. It needs regular cleaning; dirt and algae reduce slip resistance on any outdoor surface.

How is a walk-on rooflight supported?

It sits on its own upstand or frame, set so the glass finishes level with paving or decking on pedestals. On new or altered structure an engineer usually confirms the support.

What does it cost?

Our walk-on rooflights are typically £3,595–£11,995 inc VAT supplied and fitted, depending on size, glass and structure. Our guide prices are on the walk-on rooflights page.
