Bespoke & shaped rooflights in Finchley: what is involved?
Thinking about bespoke & shaped rooflights in Finchley? The short answer: triangular, angled, curved and multi-pane rooflights made to measure. The longer answer depends on your roof, which is why we survey before we price.
Mansard and loft conversions are common across London, and roof windows are often set out alongside dormers on the rear slope. Typical uses for bespoke & shaped rooflights include openings that standard sizes do not fit.
We work across Greater London, including Finchley, and in neighbouring towns such as Muswell Hill and Highgate. Access, parking and how the glass reaches the roof are all checked at the survey.
What you can choose
- Multi-pane butt-jointed runs
- Sloped or monopitch rooflights
- Concealed or slim frames
- Triangular and trapezoid panes
- Corner and wrap-around glazing
- Drawing sign-off before order
- Glass shaped to the architecture
Before you order: points to check
- Large panes need a lifting plan
- Longer lead times and no returns on made-to-measure glass
Do you need permission in Finchley?
English householder permitted development (Class C) normally covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof plane and stay below the highest part of the roof. Listed buildings need listed building consent, flats have no householder permitted development rights, and an Article 4 direction can remove the rights in some conservation areas.
For English homes the energy rules ask for rooflights of 2.2 W/m²K or better and roof windows of 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B); most modern double glazed units meet both. Replacing a rooflight or roof window can be self-certified by an installer registered with an authorised competent person scheme; otherwise building control approval is needed.
See our building regulations guide for U-values, glazing limits and self-certification.

Questions about bespoke & shaped rooflights in Finchley
Do you need my architect's drawings?
They help. We still survey on site, because built openings rarely match drawings exactly.
Can any shape be made?
Most straight-edged shapes can be made in glass, within the manufacturer's size and angle limits. Curved glass is possible but specialist.
Why does bespoke take longer?
Each unit is drawn, checked and manufactured to order.
Can you work alongside my builder in Finchley?
Yes. On new extensions we fit once the opening and upstand are ready and coordinate dates with your builder.
Will I need planning permission in Finchley?
Most rooflights on English houses do not need planning permission, provided they keep within 150 mm of the roof surface and below the ridge line.
