Loft conversion skylights in Aberystwyth: what is involved?
We handle loft conversion skylights across Dyfed, including Aberystwyth. In short: roof windows planned for loft rooms — light, headroom and escape. The survey checks structure, weathering and orientation, so the quote reflects your actual roof.
Chapels, barns and farm buildings converted across Wales often need bespoke or conservation-style glass. Think of loft conversion skylights for loft conversions and rooms in the roof.
We work across Dyfed, including Aberystwyth, and in neighbouring towns such as Machynlleth and Dolgellau. Access, parking and how the glass reaches the roof are all checked at the survey.

Planning and building rules for Aberystwyth
In Wales a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development if it stands no more than 15 cm proud of the roof, except on protected land such as conservation areas and National Parks, where permission is needed. A side-facing rooflight within 10.5 m of the boundary must be obscure-glazed, and non-opening unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
Welsh Building Regulations expect new or replacement rooflights to reach 2.2 W/m²K and roof windows 1.4 W/m²K or a Band B rating. A revised Welsh Approved Document L takes effect on 4 March 2027; rooflights in new dwellings stay at 2.2 W/m²K.

Questions about loft conversion skylights in Aberystwyth
Top-hung or centre-pivot in a loft?
Top-hung gives a clearer view and often suits escape use; centre-pivot is easier to clean and suits higher positions.
How many roof windows does a loft room need?
Enough to give good light — a common rule of thumb is glazing equal to roughly a tenth to a fifth of the floor area, adjusted for orientation and use. We advise at survey.
Can I add blinds later?
Yes — most manufacturers make blinds for each window size.
Will I need planning permission in Aberystwyth?
Planning rules in Wales are tighter than in England for rooflights: Class C rights do not apply in conservation areas, National Parks or AONBs, so a rooflight there needs planning permission.
Do I need to be at home for the survey in Aberystwyth?
Yes — someone needs to let us into the room below and, where possible, show us how the roof is reached.
