Electric opening rooflights in Windsor: what is involved?
Electric opening rooflights in Windsor means hinged rooflights that open on an electric actuator for fresh air. We cover the SL4 district and the rest of Berkshire, with a survey before any price is fixed.
Larger gardens in much of the South East mean deeper rear extensions, and deeper rooms need light from above rather than only from the doors. Electric opening rooflights suit kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms that need fresh air as well as light.
Neighbouring towns include Slough (3 km) and Egham (7 km). We offer a survey date when we reply to your enquiry.

Do you need permission in Windsor?
In England a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development under Class C if it projects no more than 150 mm beyond the roof slope and sits no higher than the ridge. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
Building Regulations Approved Document L sets a limiting U-value of 2.2 W/m²K for new or replacement rooflights in existing homes, measured in the horizontal plane; roof windows need 1.4 W/m²K or a Band B energy rating. The Future Homes and Buildings Standards, published in March 2026, apply from 24 March 2027 and keep the 2.2 W/m²K limit for rooflights.

Common questions
Can it open in a power cut?
Most electric units stay where they are during a power cut. Some manufacturers offer a manual override or battery backup — we will tell you which option the chosen model has.
Is it secure when open?
An opening rooflight is a vent, not an access hatch, so the gap is small. For security, close it when the house is empty — a rain sensor does not lock the unit.
Does it need an electrician?
The rooflight wiring needs a suitable supply. We can arrange it, or your own electrician can provide the spur and we connect the unit.
Can you work alongside my builder in Windsor?
Yes. On new extensions we fit once the opening and upstand are ready and coordinate dates with your builder.
Will I need planning permission in Windsor?
English householder permitted development (Class C) normally covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof plane and stay below the highest part of the roof.
