Pitched roof windows in Reading: what is involved?
For Reading homes and buildings we offer pitched roof windows: centre-pivot and top-hung skylights for tiled and slate roofs. We measure first, specify to the opening and confirm any planning or building-control points before quoting.
Orangery-style extensions with lanterns are popular across the South East, and solar-control glass makes a big difference on south-facing gardens. Pitched roof windows suit pitched roofs over bedrooms, stairs and bathrooms.
Reading is the main town we list in Berkshire; we also cover nearby Earley and Henley-on-Thames.

Do you need permission in Reading?
In England a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development under Class C if it projects no more than 150 mm beyond the roof slope and sits no higher than the ridge. Listed buildings need listed building consent, flats have no householder permitted development rights, and an Article 4 direction can remove the rights in some conservation areas.
Under Approved Document L, a rooflight added to an English home must achieve at least 2.2 W/m²K (horizontal plane), and a roof window 1.4 W/m²K or Window Energy Rating Band B. The Future Homes and Buildings Standards, published in March 2026, apply from 24 March 2027 and keep the 2.2 W/m²K limit for rooflights.
Read the planning permission guide before you commit to a design.

Questions about pitched roof windows in Reading
Can roof windows be electric?
Yes — electric and solar-powered models open by remote and many include rain sensors.
Centre-pivot or top-hung?
Centre-pivot windows are easy to clean and suit most rooms. Top-hung windows open out from the top for an unobstructed view and suit lower roof pitches near eye level.
Do I need planning permission for a roof window?
Often not, under householder permitted development, provided it does not project too far above the roof plane and conditions are met. Listed buildings, flats and some conservation areas are different. Our planning guide covers each nation.
Is the survey in Reading free?
Yes for new installations. Repair visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we book.
Do I need to be at home for the survey in Reading?
Yes — someone needs to let us into the room below and, where possible, show us how the roof is reached.
