Pitched roof windows in Hull: what is involved?
For Hull homes and buildings we offer pitched roof windows: centre-pivot and top-hung skylights for tiled and slate roofs. We measure first, specify to the opening and confirm any planning or building-control points before quoting.
Conservation areas and stone villages across Yorkshire often call for conservation rooflights in slate or stone-slate roofs. In Hull, as anywhere, pitched roof windows are the usual choice for pitched roofs over bedrooms, stairs and bathrooms.
We cover all of Hull and the HU1 district, and nearby Beverley and Hornsea.
What you can choose

What to check first

- Rafters may need trimming for wider windows
Do you need permission in Hull?
Most rooflights on English houses do not need planning permission, provided they keep within 150 mm of the roof surface and below the ridge line. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
Under Approved Document L, a rooflight added to an English home must achieve at least 2.2 W/m²K (horizontal plane), and a roof window 1.4 W/m²K or Window Energy Rating Band B. The Future Homes and Buildings Standards, published in March 2026, apply from 24 March 2027 and keep the 2.2 W/m²K limit for rooflights.

Common questions
Can you replace an old roof window?
Yes — replacement into the same opening is usually quicker than a new install, often a few hours per window.
Centre-pivot or top-hung?
Centre-pivot windows are easy to clean and suit most rooms. Top-hung windows open out from the top for an unobstructed view and suit lower roof pitches near eye level.
Can a roof window be fitted from inside?
In most cases, yes — only the tiles around the opening are lifted, and much of the work is done from inside the loft.
Is the survey in Hull free?
Yes for new installations. Repair visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we book.
How do I book a survey in Hull?
Send your postcode and, if you can, a photo of the roof and the room. We offer a survey date when we reply.
