Pitched roof windows in North Yorkshire: the essentials
Across North Yorkshire, our pitched roof windows work covers centre-pivot and top-hung skylights for tiled and slate roofs. Survey first, fixed price second, fitting third.
Stone-built terraces are common across Yorkshire, and roof windows in the rear slope are a popular way to light attic rooms. Exposed Pennine and coastal towns in Yorkshire need upstand and flashing details built for wind-driven rain.

Planning and building rules in England
Most rooflights on English houses do not need planning permission, provided they keep within 150 mm of the roof surface and below the ridge line. Listed buildings need listed building consent, flats have no householder permitted development rights, and an Article 4 direction can remove the rights in some conservation areas.
Under Approved Document L, a rooflight added to an English home must achieve at least 2.2 W/m²K (horizontal plane), and a roof window 1.4 W/m²K or Window Energy Rating Band B. The Future Homes and Buildings Standards, published in March 2026, apply from 24 March 2027 and keep the 2.2 W/m²K limit for rooflights.

Common questions
Centre-pivot or top-hung?
Centre-pivot windows are easy to clean and suit most rooms. Top-hung windows open out from the top for an unobstructed view and suit lower roof pitches near eye level.
Will it need building regulations approval?
Fitting a new roof window usually involves cutting rafters and changing the thermal envelope, so building control approval (or, in England and Wales, a competent-person route) is normally needed. We tell you which applies.
Can you replace an old roof window?
Yes — replacement into the same opening is usually quicker than a new install, often a few hours per window.
Can roof windows be electric?
Yes — electric and solar-powered models open by remote and many include rain sensors.
Do you fit pitched roof windows across North Yorkshire?
Yes. We survey and fit pitched roof windows across North Yorkshire, including York, Middlesbrough, Harrogate.
