How we approach rooflight upstands & kerbs in Manchester
Rooflight upstands & kerbs in Manchester means insulated kerbs built and waterproofed to suit your rooflight. We cover the M1 district and the rest of Greater Manchester, with a survey before any price is fixed.
Stone and brick terraces are typical across the North West, and roof windows in rear slopes are a common way to light attic rooms. Rooflight upstands & kerbs suit new flat-roof openings and rooflight replacements.
Manchester is the main town we list in Greater Manchester; we also cover nearby Salford and Failsworth.

Do you need permission in Manchester?
English householder permitted development (Class C) normally covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof plane and stay below the highest part of the roof. Listed buildings need listed building consent, flats have no householder permitted development rights, and an Article 4 direction can remove the rights in some conservation areas.
For English homes the energy rules ask for rooflights of 2.2 W/m²K or better and roof windows of 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B); most modern double glazed units meet both. The Future Homes and Buildings Standards, published in March 2026, apply from 24 March 2027 and keep the 2.2 W/m²K limit for rooflights.
See our building regulations guide for U-values, glazing limits and self-certification.

Questions about rooflight upstands & kerbs in Manchester
How high should a rooflight upstand be?
High enough to meet the rooflight manufacturer's minimum above the finished roof surface — commonly 150 mm. On roofs with deep finishes, such as green roofs, it needs to be taller.
Can I build the upstand myself?
Your builder can, to our drawing. We check it before the rooflight is fitted, because the unit must sit square and level.
Can an old upstand be reused?
If it is sound, square, insulated and the right size. Often it is cheaper to rebuild than adapt.
Will I need planning permission in Manchester?
Most rooflights on English houses do not need planning permission, provided they keep within 150 mm of the roof surface and below the ridge line.
Is the survey in Manchester free?
Yes for new installations. Repair visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we book.
