Rooflight upstands & kerbs in Godalming: what is involved?
For Godalming homes and buildings we offer rooflight upstands & kerbs: insulated kerbs built and waterproofed to suit your rooflight. We measure first, specify to the opening and confirm any planning or building-control points before quoting.
Period cottages and conservation-area streets are common in the South East, so slim conservation rooflights are often the right choice. In Godalming, as anywhere, rooflight upstands & kerbs are the usual choice for roofs where the old kerb is low, cold or leaking.
Godalming is around 15 km from Woking, and we survey and fit throughout that part of Surrey, including the GU7 district.

Planning, building control and Godalming
English householder permitted development (Class C) normally covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof plane and stay below the highest part of the roof. Listed buildings need listed building consent, flats have no householder permitted development rights, and an Article 4 direction can remove the rights in some conservation areas.
Building Regulations Approved Document L sets a limiting U-value of 2.2 W/m²K for new or replacement rooflights in existing homes, measured in the horizontal plane; roof windows need 1.4 W/m²K or a Band B energy rating. In an extension, glazing including rooflights is normally limited to 25% of the new floor area plus any windows or doors the extension covers, unless a whole-house calculation shows otherwise.
See our building regulations guide for U-values, glazing limits and self-certification.

Common questions
How high should a rooflight upstand be?
High enough to meet the rooflight manufacturer's minimum above the finished roof surface — commonly 150 mm. On roofs with deep finishes, such as green roofs, it needs to be taller.
Can an old upstand be reused?
If it is sound, square, insulated and the right size. Often it is cheaper to rebuild than adapt.
Does every rooflight need an upstand?
Flat and dome rooflights do. Pitched roof windows use flashing kits instead.
Will I need planning permission in Godalming?
Most rooflights on English houses do not need planning permission, provided they keep within 150 mm of the roof surface and below the ridge line.
Is the survey in Godalming free?
Yes for new installations. Repair visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we book.
