Skylight blinds & solar control in Peterlee: what is involved?
For Peterlee homes and buildings we offer skylight blinds & solar control: electric blinds, blackout and solar-control upgrades for rooflights. We measure first, specify to the opening and confirm any planning or building-control points before quoting.
Older flat-roofed extensions in the North East are often due a new roof covering — the right time to upgrade the rooflight too. Skylight blinds & solar control suit rooflights that let in glare, heat or early light.
Peterlee is around 30 km from Darlington, and we survey and fit throughout that part of Durham, including the SR8 district.

Planning and building rules for Peterlee
In England a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development under Class C if it projects no more than 150 mm beyond the roof slope and sits no higher than the ridge. Listed buildings need listed building consent, flats have no householder permitted development rights, and an Article 4 direction can remove the rights in some conservation areas.
For English homes the energy rules ask for rooflights of 2.2 W/m²K or better and roof windows of 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B); most modern double glazed units meet both. The Future Homes and Buildings Standards, published in March 2026, apply from 24 March 2027 and keep the 2.2 W/m²K limit for rooflights.

Common questions
Will a blind stop a rooflight getting hot?
An internal blind helps with glare but some heat still gets in behind it. Solar-control glass or an external shade does more for heat.
Are electric blinds worth it?
For high rooflights you cannot reach, yes. Solar-powered models avoid new wiring.
Can I get full blackout?
Blackout fabrics in side channels give near-total darkness.
Is the survey in Peterlee free?
Yes for new installations. Repair visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we book.
Can you work alongside my builder in Peterlee?
Yes. On new extensions we fit once the opening and upstand are ready and coordinate dates with your builder.
