How we approach skylight blinds & solar control in Darwen
We handle skylight blinds & solar control across Lancashire, including Darwen. In short: electric blinds, blackout and solar-control upgrades for rooflights. The survey checks structure, weathering and orientation, so the quote reflects your actual roof.
Stone and brick terraces are typical across the North West, and roof windows in rear slopes are a common way to light attic rooms. Skylight blinds & solar control suit bedrooms, nurseries and south-facing kitchens.
We work across Lancashire, including Darwen, and in neighbouring towns such as Blackburn and Accrington. Access, parking and how the glass reaches the roof are all checked at the survey.

Planning, building control and Darwen
English householder permitted development (Class C) normally covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof plane and stay below the highest part of the roof. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
Under Approved Document L, a rooflight added to an English home must achieve at least 2.2 W/m²K (horizontal plane), and a roof window 1.4 W/m²K or Window Energy Rating Band B. In an extension, glazing including rooflights is normally limited to 25% of the new floor area plus any windows or doors the extension covers, unless a whole-house calculation shows otherwise.
See our building regulations guide for U-values, glazing limits and self-certification.

Questions about skylight blinds & solar control in Darwen
Do blinds work on roof lanterns?
Lantern blinds exist but are complex; solar-control glass is often the better answer.
What is an integral blind?
A blind sealed between the panes of the glass unit. It never gets dusty or damaged, but is ordered with the unit.
Will a blind stop a rooflight getting hot?
An internal blind helps with glare but some heat still gets in behind it. Solar-control glass or an external shade does more for heat.
Can you work alongside my builder in Darwen?
Yes. On new extensions we fit once the opening and upstand are ready and coordinate dates with your builder.
Is the survey in Darwen free?
Yes for new installations. Repair visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we book.
