What do skylight blinds & solar control in Rhondda involve?

We handle skylight blinds & solar control across Mid Glamorgan, including Rhondda. In short: electric blinds, blackout and solar-control upgrades for rooflights. The survey checks structure, weathering and orientation, so the quote reflects your actual roof.

Wales sees a lot of wind-driven rain, particularly in the west, so upstand height and flashing laps matter more than anywhere. Skylight blinds & solar control suit bedrooms, nurseries and south-facing kitchens.

We cover all of Rhondda and the CF42 district, and nearby Tonypandy and Aberdare.

Options we can specify in Rhondda

  • Solar-powered remote blinds
  • Solar-control glass replacement

  • Integral blinds within the glass
  • Electric pleated or roller blinds
  • Retrofit to most rooflights
  • Blackout for bedrooms and nurseries

Things we check at survey

  • Electric blinds need a power supply or solar panel
  • Cord safety rules apply to blinds in homes with children

Planning and building rules for Rhondda

Welsh householder permitted development (Class C) allows rooflights that project no more than 15 cm and sit no higher than the existing roof — but not in conservation areas, National Parks, AONBs or World Heritage Sites. A side-facing rooflight within 10.5 m of the boundary must be obscure-glazed, and non-opening unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.

Welsh Building Regulations expect new or replacement rooflights to reach 2.2 W/m²K and roof windows 1.4 W/m²K or a Band B rating. A revised Welsh Approved Document L takes effect on 4 March 2027; rooflights in new dwellings stay at 2.2 W/m²K.

Our planning guide covers each nation in more detail.

Common questions

Do blinds work on roof lanterns?

Lantern blinds exist but are complex; solar-control glass is often the better answer.

Will a blind stop a rooflight getting hot?

An internal blind helps with glare but some heat still gets in behind it. Solar-control glass or an external shade does more for heat.

Are electric blinds worth it?

For high rooflights you cannot reach, yes. Solar-powered models avoid new wiring.

Is the survey in Rhondda free?

Yes for new installations. Repair visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we book.

Will I need planning permission in Rhondda?

In Wales a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development if it stands no more than 15 cm proud of the roof, except on protected land such as conservation areas and National Parks, where permission is needed.
