Skylight replacement in Cambridge: what is involved?
We handle skylight replacement across Cambridgeshire, including Cambridge. In short: replacing tired domes and failed glass with a modern rooflight. The survey checks structure, weathering and orientation, so the quote reflects your actual roof.
In the East of England, bungalows and chalet bungalows with large flat-roofed extensions are common, and they often suit a long run of rooflights. In Cambridge, as anywhere, skylight replacement is the usual choice for yellowed domes, misted glass and leaking roof windows.
Cambridge sits about 20 km from St Ives and 20 km from Newmarket, and we cover the whole CB1 postcode district and the roads in between.

Consents for skylight replacement in Cambridge
Most rooflights on English houses do not need planning permission, provided they keep within 150 mm of the roof surface and below the ridge line. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
Building Regulations Approved Document L sets a limiting U-value of 2.2 W/m²K for new or replacement rooflights in existing homes, measured in the horizontal plane; roof windows need 1.4 W/m²K or a Band B energy rating. In an extension, glazing including rooflights is normally limited to 25% of the new floor area plus any windows or doors the extension covers, unless a whole-house calculation shows otherwise.
See our building regulations guide for U-values, glazing limits and self-certification.

Common questions
Can I go bigger when replacing?
Possibly. Enlarging the opening means trimming joists, so we check the structure first.
Will it mess up my ceiling?
We protect the room and make good the reveal. Minor decoration may be needed afterwards.
Do I need building regulations approval to replace a rooflight?
Replacements in existing homes generally need to meet current thermal standards and may need notification or approval. We advise on the route for your job.
How do I book a survey in Cambridge?
Send your postcode and, if you can, a photo of the roof and the room. We offer a survey date when we reply.
Is the survey in Cambridge free?
Yes for new installations. Repair visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we book.
