Sliding rooflights in Chelsea: what is involved?
For Chelsea homes and buildings we offer sliding rooflights: box rooflights whose glass lid slides back for walk-out roof access. We measure first, specify to the opening and confirm any planning or building-control points before quoting.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces with narrow side returns are typical of much of London, and a glass roof or long flat rooflight is the usual way to keep the back rooms bright once the return is built over. Typical uses for sliding rooflights include walk-out access where a hatch would feel cramped.
From Chelsea to Battersea, Wandsworth and Kensington, the same survey-first process applies: measure, specify, fix the price, then fit.
Choices for your Chelsea project
- Anthracite, black or RAL frames
- Electric drive with safety edge
- Rain sensor
- Double or triple glazing
- Box (glazed sides) or flat sliding lid
- Replaces a dormer or stair enclosure on some roofs
- Electric operation with safety stops
What to check first
- Weight and point loads need a structural check
- Needs space on the roof for the lid to slide clear
Do you need permission in Chelsea?
In England a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development under Class C if it projects no more than 150 mm beyond the roof slope and sits no higher than the ridge. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
Under Approved Document L, a rooflight added to an English home must achieve at least 2.2 W/m²K (horizontal plane), and a roof window 1.4 W/m²K or Window Energy Rating Band B. Replacing a rooflight or roof window can be self-certified by an installer registered with an authorised competent person scheme; otherwise building control approval is needed.
See our building regulations guide for U-values, glazing limits and self-certification.
