How we approach sun tunnels & tubular skylights in Penrith
We handle sun tunnels & tubular skylights across Cumbria, including Penrith. In short: light pipes that bring daylight to halls and bathrooms with no window. The survey checks structure, weathering and orientation, so the quote reflects your actual roof.
The North West gets more rain than most of England, so upstand height, membrane detailing and rain sensors on opening units are not optional extras. In Penrith, as anywhere, sun tunnels & tubular skylights are the usual choice for small internal rooms where a full rooflight will not fit.
We work across Cumbria, including Penrith, and in neighbouring towns such as Keswick and Carlisle. Access, parking and how the glass reaches the roof are all checked at the survey.

Do you need permission in Penrith?
In England a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development under Class C if it projects no more than 150 mm beyond the roof slope and sits no higher than the ridge. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
Under Approved Document L, a rooflight added to an English home must achieve at least 2.2 W/m²K (horizontal plane), and a roof window 1.4 W/m²K or Window Energy Rating Band B. The Future Homes and Buildings Standards, published in March 2026, apply from 24 March 2027 and keep the 2.2 W/m²K limit for rooflights.
Read the planning permission guide before you commit to a design.

Sun tunnels & tubular skylights in Penrith: questions
Can it work at night?
Some models include a light fitting in the diffuser.
Rigid or flexible tube?
Rigid tubes carry much more light. Flexible tubes are easier where the loft is cluttered, but lose light faster.
Will it get condensation?
Insulating the tube where it passes through a cold loft prevents most condensation.
Will I need planning permission in Penrith?
English householder permitted development (Class C) normally covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof plane and stay below the highest part of the roof.
Can you work alongside my builder in Penrith?
Yes. On new extensions we fit once the opening and upstand are ready and coordinate dates with your builder.
