Conservation rooflights in March: what is involved?
Our conservation rooflights service in March covers slim, low-profile steel-look rooflights for period and listed roofs. Every job starts with a survey of the opening, the roof covering and the room below, and a fixed written price.
In the East of England, bungalows and chalet bungalows with large flat-roofed extensions are common, and they often suit a long run of rooflights. In March, as anywhere, conservation rooflights are the usual choice for slate and plain-tile roofs where a quiet roofline matters.
From March to Wisbech, Ely and Peterborough, the same survey-first process applies: measure, specify, fix the price, then fit.
Options we can specify in March
- Manual or electric opening
- Flashings for slate or plain tile
- Blinds
- Steel or aluminium frames
- Central vertical glazing bar
- Often preferred by conservation officers
- Steel or aluminium frame in black or grey
Before you order: points to check
- Projection above the roof line is limited — usually as flush as possible
- Listed building consent is needed for listed buildings
Planning and building rules for March
In England a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development under Class C if it projects no more than 150 mm beyond the roof slope and sits no higher than the ridge. Listed buildings need listed building consent, flats have no householder permitted development rights, and an Article 4 direction can remove the rights in some conservation areas.
For English homes the energy rules ask for rooflights of 2.2 W/m²K or better and roof windows of 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B); most modern double glazed units meet both. Replacing a rooflight or roof window can be self-certified by an installer registered with an authorised competent person scheme; otherwise building control approval is needed.
See our building regulations guide for U-values, glazing limits and self-certification.
