Dome rooflights for Nelson: the essentials
We handle dome rooflights across Lancashire, including Nelson. In short: polycarbonate and acrylic domes for flat roofs, new or replacement. The survey checks structure, weathering and orientation, so the quote reflects your actual roof.
Rear kitchen extensions on North West semis often have small domes from decades ago that leak or have yellowed. In Nelson, as anywhere, dome rooflights are the usual choice for schools, flats and commercial flat roofs.
We work across Lancashire, including Nelson, and in neighbouring towns such as Colne and Burnley. Access, parking and how the glass reaches the roof are all checked at the survey.
Options we can specify in Nelson
- Twin, triple or quad skin
- Clear, opal or tinted
- Fixed or hinged with vent
- Insulated PVC or GRP upstands
- Fall-through protection mesh
- Light, impact-resistant domes
- Smoke-vent versions available
Before you order: points to check
- Plastic domes have a lower acoustic and thermal performance than glass
- Old domes may be fragile — treat as fragile until checked
Building control and safety duties in Nelson
For non-domestic buildings, planning depends on the building and its location; building regulations cover thermal performance and the fire classification of rooflights near boundaries. Product data for building control is supplied with every quote.
For buildings other than dwellings, Approved Document L Volume 2 sets limiting U-values of 2.2 W/m²K for rooflights and 3.0 W/m²K for roof ventilators, including smoke vents. Fragile-roof safety and access are planned before work starts.
Our planning guide covers each nation in more detail.

Dome rooflights in Nelson: questions
Can domes open?
Hinged and vented domes are available, manual or electric.
Do domes leak?
Leaks are usually at the upstand seal or the membrane. Replacing the dome and resealing often fixes it.
Why has my dome gone yellow?
UV breaks down older plastics over time. Modern domes have UV-protective layers, but all plastics age.
