Roof lanterns in Wimbledon: what is involved?
Our roof lanterns service in Wimbledon covers hipped glass lanterns that lift the ceiling of orangeries and extensions. Every job starts with a survey of the opening, the roof covering and the room below, and a fixed written price.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces with narrow side returns are typical of much of London, and a glass roof or long flat rooflight is the usual way to keep the back rooms bright once the return is built over. Typical uses for roof lanterns include orangeries, kitchen-diners and single-storey extensions.
Wimbledon sits about 3 km from Morden and 3 km from Mitcham, and we cover the whole SW19 postcode district and the roads in between.

Do you need permission in Wimbledon?
English householder permitted development (Class C) normally covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof plane and stay below the highest part of the roof. Listed buildings need listed building consent, flats have no householder permitted development rights, and an Article 4 direction can remove the rights in some conservation areas.
Building Regulations Approved Document L sets a limiting U-value of 2.2 W/m²K for new or replacement rooflights in existing homes, measured in the horizontal plane; roof windows need 1.4 W/m²K or a Band B energy rating. The Future Homes and Buildings Standards, published in March 2026, apply from 24 March 2027 and keep the 2.2 W/m²K limit for rooflights.

Questions about roof lanterns in Wimbledon
Can a lantern go on an existing extension?
Yes, if the flat roof structure can be opened up and trimmed. We check joists and the roof build-up at survey.
Do they leak?
Modern lanterns are sealed systems. Leaks usually trace back to the kerb or roof membrane detail, which we form and check ourselves.
Do roof lanterns get hot?
They can in summer if clear glass is used on a south-facing roof. Solar-control glass and an opening vent make a big difference.
How do I book a survey in Wimbledon?
Send your postcode and, if you can, a photo of the roof and the room. We offer a survey date when we reply.
Is the survey in Wimbledon free?
Yes for new installations. Repair visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we book.
