Roof lanterns in Deal: what is involved?
Our roof lanterns service in Deal covers hipped glass lanterns that lift the ceiling of orangeries and extensions. Every job starts with a survey of the opening, the roof covering and the room below, and a fixed written price.
Many South East homes have been extended more than once, and an old dome over an earlier extension is often due for replacement. In Deal, as anywhere, roof lanterns are the usual choice for rooms that need height as well as light.
We work across Kent, including Deal, and in neighbouring towns such as Dover and Ramsgate. Access, parking and how the glass reaches the roof are all checked at the survey.
What you can choose
- Solar-control or self-cleaning glass
- Opening vents with electric control
- Rectangular, square or bespoke sizes
- Internal and external colours
- LED lighting in the plaster box
- Can include opening vents
- Adds visual height to a single-storey room
What to check first
- Needs a strong, level kerb or upstand
- Plaster-box depth affects how the lantern looks from below
Consents for roof lanterns in Deal
Most rooflights on English houses do not need planning permission, provided they keep within 150 mm of the roof surface and below the ridge line. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
For English homes the energy rules ask for rooflights of 2.2 W/m²K or better and roof windows of 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B); most modern double glazed units meet both. The Future Homes and Buildings Standards, published in March 2026, apply from 24 March 2027 and keep the 2.2 W/m²K limit for rooflights.
Our planning guide covers each nation in more detail.

These are typical supply-and-fit ranges. For an address in Deal, scaffold, a hoist for heavy glass, or a new structural opening can move the figure, which is why we survey first.

The process, step by step
- Tell us what you have. Send the CT14 postcode, a rough size and a couple of photos.
- Measure and check. A surveyor visits Deal, measures and checks structure and access.
- Agree the quote. You approve the specification and price before anything is ordered.
- Fit and make good. We fit, seal, test and finish the reveal, then hand over the paperwork.

Roof lanterns in Deal: questions
Roof lantern or flat rooflight?
A lantern adds height and sky from all sides; a flat rooflight is lower-profile and cleaner from outside. Our guide compares them in detail.
Aluminium or uPVC?
Aluminium gives slimmer bars and a longer life; uPVC costs less. We fit both.
Do roof lanterns get hot?
They can in summer if clear glass is used on a south-facing roof. Solar-control glass and an opening vent make a big difference.
Can you work alongside my builder in Deal?
Yes. On new extensions we fit once the opening and upstand are ready and coordinate dates with your builder.
Do you fit roof lanterns in Deal?
Yes. We survey and fit roof lanterns in Deal and across Kent. Send your postcode and we will offer a survey date when we reply.
