Roof lanterns for Didcot: the essentials
Thinking about roof lanterns in Didcot? The short answer: hipped glass lanterns that lift the ceiling of orangeries and extensions. The longer answer depends on your roof, which is why we survey before we price.
Many South East homes have been extended more than once, and an old dome over an earlier extension is often due for replacement. Roof lanterns suit rooms that need height as well as light.
We work across Oxfordshire, including Didcot, and in neighbouring towns such as Abingdon and Wantage. Access, parking and how the glass reaches the roof are all checked at the survey.
What you can choose
- Solar-control or self-cleaning glass
- Opening vents with electric control
- Rectangular, square or bespoke sizes
- Aluminium or uPVC systems
- Internal and external colours
- Double or triple glazed with solar-control options
- Slim aluminium bars, more glass
Before you order: points to check
- Some designs project above the roof enough to affect planning on certain houses
- Needs a strong, level kerb or upstand
Do you need permission in Didcot?
In England a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development under Class C if it projects no more than 150 mm beyond the roof slope and sits no higher than the ridge. Listed buildings need listed building consent, flats have no householder permitted development rights, and an Article 4 direction can remove the rights in some conservation areas.
Under Approved Document L, a rooflight added to an English home must achieve at least 2.2 W/m²K (horizontal plane), and a roof window 1.4 W/m²K or Window Energy Rating Band B. The Future Homes and Buildings Standards, published in March 2026, apply from 24 March 2027 and keep the 2.2 W/m²K limit for rooflights.
See our building regulations guide for U-values, glazing limits and self-certification.

Common questions
Do they leak?
Modern lanterns are sealed systems. Leaks usually trace back to the kerb or roof membrane detail, which we form and check ourselves.
Can a lantern go on an existing extension?
Yes, if the flat roof structure can be opened up and trimmed. We check joists and the roof build-up at survey.
Aluminium or uPVC?
Aluminium gives slimmer bars and a longer life; uPVC costs less. We fit both.
Can you work alongside my builder in Didcot?
Yes. On new extensions we fit once the opening and upstand are ready and coordinate dates with your builder.
How do I book a survey in Didcot?
Send your postcode and, if you can, a photo of the roof and the room. We offer a survey date when we reply.
