Pitched roof windows for Southampton: the essentials
For Southampton homes and buildings we offer pitched roof windows: centre-pivot and top-hung skylights for tiled and slate roofs. We measure first, specify to the opening and confirm any planning or building-control points before quoting.
Larger gardens in much of the South East mean deeper rear extensions, and deeper rooms need light from above rather than only from the doors. In Southampton, as anywhere, pitched roof windows are the usual choice for lofts, attic rooms, landings and vaulted ceilings.
Southampton is the main town we list in Hampshire; we also cover nearby Hythe and Totton.

Planning and building rules for Southampton
In England a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development under Class C if it projects no more than 150 mm beyond the roof slope and sits no higher than the ridge. Listed buildings need listed building consent, flats have no householder permitted development rights, and an Article 4 direction can remove the rights in some conservation areas.
For English homes the energy rules ask for rooflights of 2.2 W/m²K or better and roof windows of 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B); most modern double glazed units meet both. In an extension, glazing including rooflights is normally limited to 25% of the new floor area plus any windows or doors the extension covers, unless a whole-house calculation shows otherwise.
See our building regulations guide for U-values, glazing limits and self-certification.

Questions about pitched roof windows in Southampton
Can a roof window be fitted from inside?
In most cases, yes — only the tiles around the opening are lifted, and much of the work is done from inside the loft.
Do I need planning permission for a roof window?
Often not, under householder permitted development, provided it does not project too far above the roof plane and conditions are met. Listed buildings, flats and some conservation areas are different. Our planning guide covers each nation.
Can you replace an old roof window?
Yes — replacement into the same opening is usually quicker than a new install, often a few hours per window.
Is the survey in Southampton free?
Yes for new installations. Repair visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we book.
Can you work alongside my builder in Southampton?
Yes. On new extensions we fit once the opening and upstand are ready and coordinate dates with your builder.
