What do rooflight upstands & kerbs in Cambridge involve?
We handle rooflight upstands & kerbs across Cambridgeshire, including Cambridge. In short: insulated kerbs built and waterproofed to suit your rooflight. The survey checks structure, weathering and orientation, so the quote reflects your actual roof.
Coastal towns in the East of England see salty air, so we specify frame finishes and fixings with exposure in mind. Rooflight upstands & kerbs suit new flat-roof openings and rooflight replacements.
Jobs in Cambridge are planned around access: whether the roof can be reached from the garden, whether a hoist or crane is needed, and where we can park. We check this when we measure.
Choices for your Cambridge project
- Raised upstands for deep green or ballasted roofs
- Upstands to suit single-ply, felt, GRP or liquid roofs
- Timber upstands with insulation

- Internal plaster-box linings
- Fixings and falls agreed with the rooflight maker

Things we check at survey
- Minimum upstand height is set by the rooflight manufacturer — commonly 150 mm above the finished roof
- Insulation continuity around the upstand affects condensation
Planning and building rules for Cambridge
In England a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development under Class C if it projects no more than 150 mm beyond the roof slope and sits no higher than the ridge. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
Building Regulations Approved Document L sets a limiting U-value of 2.2 W/m²K for new or replacement rooflights in existing homes, measured in the horizontal plane; roof windows need 1.4 W/m²K or a Band B energy rating. The Future Homes and Buildings Standards, published in March 2026, apply from 24 March 2027 and keep the 2.2 W/m²K limit for rooflights.
See our building regulations guide for U-values, glazing limits and self-certification.

Questions about rooflight upstands & kerbs in Cambridge
Why is my rooflight cold around the edge?
Usually an uninsulated upstand. Insulating the kerb and lining the reveal fixes most cold spots.
Can an old upstand be reused?
If it is sound, square, insulated and the right size. Often it is cheaper to rebuild than adapt.
What roof coverings do you work with?
Single-ply, EPDM, felt, GRP and liquid-applied systems — or we coordinate with your roofer.
Can you work alongside my builder in Cambridge?
Yes. On new extensions we fit once the opening and upstand are ready and coordinate dates with your builder.
Do I need to be at home for the survey in Cambridge?
Yes — someone needs to let us into the room below and, where possible, show us how the roof is reached.
