How we approach rooflight upstands & kerbs in Halifax
Thinking about rooflight upstands & kerbs in Halifax? The short answer: insulated kerbs built and waterproofed to suit your rooflight. The longer answer depends on your roof, which is why we survey before we price.
Many Yorkshire homes have had kitchen extensions with flat roofs, where a larger glass rooflight is a straightforward upgrade from an old dome. Rooflight upstands & kerbs suit new flat-roof openings and rooflight replacements.
We work across West Yorkshire, including Halifax, and in neighbouring towns such as Brighouse and Huddersfield. Access, parking and how the glass reaches the roof are all checked at the survey.
What you can choose
- Proprietary insulated kerbs
- Upstand repairs and rebuilds
- Raised upstands for deep green or ballasted roofs
- Timber upstands with insulation
- Upstands to suit single-ply, felt, GRP or liquid roofs
- Correct height above the finished roof
- Insulated to avoid a cold bridge
Before you order: points to check
- Minimum upstand height is set by the rooflight manufacturer — commonly 150 mm above the finished roof
- Membrane compatibility with the rooflight's sealants
Planning and building rules for Halifax
Most rooflights on English houses do not need planning permission, provided they keep within 150 mm of the roof surface and below the ridge line. Listed buildings need listed building consent, flats have no householder permitted development rights, and an Article 4 direction can remove the rights in some conservation areas.
Under Approved Document L, a rooflight added to an English home must achieve at least 2.2 W/m²K (horizontal plane), and a roof window 1.4 W/m²K or Window Energy Rating Band B. The Future Homes and Buildings Standards, published in March 2026, apply from 24 March 2027 and keep the 2.2 W/m²K limit for rooflights.
Read the planning permission guide before you commit to a design.

Questions about rooflight upstands & kerbs in Halifax
Can an old upstand be reused?
If it is sound, square, insulated and the right size. Often it is cheaper to rebuild than adapt.
What roof coverings do you work with?
Single-ply, EPDM, felt, GRP and liquid-applied systems — or we coordinate with your roofer.
Why is my rooflight cold around the edge?
Usually an uninsulated upstand. Insulating the kerb and lining the reveal fixes most cold spots.
