Skylight blinds & solar control in Plymstock: what is involved?
Our skylight blinds & solar control service in Plymstock covers electric blinds, blackout and solar-control upgrades for rooflights. Every job starts with a survey of the opening, the roof covering and the room below, and a fixed written price.
Many South West towns mix Georgian and Victorian terraces with modern estates, so the right product differs street by street. In Plymstock, as anywhere, skylight blinds & solar control are the usual choice for bedrooms, nurseries and south-facing kitchens.
Jobs in Plymstock are planned around access: whether the roof can be reached from the garden, whether a hoist or crane is needed, and where we can park. We check this when we measure.

Do you need permission in Plymstock?
English householder permitted development (Class C) normally covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof plane and stay below the highest part of the roof. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
For English homes the energy rules ask for rooflights of 2.2 W/m²K or better and roof windows of 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B); most modern double glazed units meet both. The Future Homes and Buildings Standards, published in March 2026, apply from 24 March 2027 and keep the 2.2 W/m²K limit for rooflights.
See our building regulations guide for U-values, glazing limits and self-certification.

Skylight blinds & solar control in Plymstock: questions
Can I get full blackout?
Blackout fabrics in side channels give near-total darkness.
Will a blind stop a rooflight getting hot?
An internal blind helps with glare but some heat still gets in behind it. Solar-control glass or an external shade does more for heat.
What is an integral blind?
A blind sealed between the panes of the glass unit. It never gets dusty or damaged, but is ordered with the unit.
Can you work alongside my builder in Plymstock?
Yes. On new extensions we fit once the opening and upstand are ready and coordinate dates with your builder.
Do I need to be at home for the survey in Plymstock?
Yes — someone needs to let us into the room below and, where possible, show us how the roof is reached.
