Skylight blinds & solar control in Leicester: what is involved?
For Leicester homes and buildings we offer skylight blinds & solar control: electric blinds, blackout and solar-control upgrades for rooflights. We measure first, specify to the opening and confirm any planning or building-control points before quoting.
Older terraced streets in Midlands towns often have back additions and side passages that suit a ridge rooflight or long flat rooflight. Typical uses for skylight blinds & solar control include bedrooms, nurseries and south-facing kitchens.
We cover all of Leicester and the LE1 district, and nearby Oadby and Wigston.

Planning and building rules for Leicester
In England a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development under Class C if it projects no more than 150 mm beyond the roof slope and sits no higher than the ridge. Listed buildings need listed building consent, flats have no householder permitted development rights, and an Article 4 direction can remove the rights in some conservation areas.
Building Regulations Approved Document L sets a limiting U-value of 2.2 W/m²K for new or replacement rooflights in existing homes, measured in the horizontal plane; roof windows need 1.4 W/m²K or a Band B energy rating. The Future Homes and Buildings Standards, published in March 2026, apply from 24 March 2027 and keep the 2.2 W/m²K limit for rooflights.
Read the planning permission guide before you commit to a design.

Skylight blinds & solar control in Leicester: questions
Will a blind stop a rooflight getting hot?
An internal blind helps with glare but some heat still gets in behind it. Solar-control glass or an external shade does more for heat.
Are electric blinds worth it?
For high rooflights you cannot reach, yes. Solar-powered models avoid new wiring.
Can you fit a blind to my existing rooflight?
Usually, yes — if there is enough depth in the reveal for the cassette and rails. We measure first.
Do I need to be at home for the survey in Leicester?
Yes — someone needs to let us into the room below and, where possible, show us how the roof is reached.
Is the survey in Leicester free?
Yes for new installations. Repair visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we book.
