Roof lanterns in Leicester: what is involved?
Our roof lanterns service in Leicester covers hipped glass lanterns that lift the ceiling of orangeries and extensions. Every job starts with a survey of the opening, the roof covering and the room below, and a fixed written price.
Older terraced streets in Midlands towns often have back additions and side passages that suit a ridge rooflight or long flat rooflight. In Leicester, as anywhere, roof lanterns are the usual choice for orangeries, kitchen-diners and single-storey extensions.
We cover all of Leicester and the LE1 district, and nearby Oadby and Wigston.

Consents for roof lanterns in Leicester
English householder permitted development (Class C) normally covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof plane and stay below the highest part of the roof. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
For English homes the energy rules ask for rooflights of 2.2 W/m²K or better and roof windows of 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B); most modern double glazed units meet both. The Future Homes and Buildings Standards, published in March 2026, apply from 24 March 2027 and keep the 2.2 W/m²K limit for rooflights.
See our building regulations guide for U-values, glazing limits and self-certification.

Common questions
How big can a lantern be?
Aluminium systems go to around three by six metres in standard ranges; larger sizes are made to order.
Do roof lanterns get hot?
They can in summer if clear glass is used on a south-facing roof. Solar-control glass and an opening vent make a big difference.
Do they leak?
Modern lanterns are sealed systems. Leaks usually trace back to the kerb or roof membrane detail, which we form and check ourselves.
Do I need to be at home for the survey in Leicester?
Yes — someone needs to let us into the room below and, where possible, show us how the roof is reached.
How do I book a survey in Leicester?
Send your postcode and, if you can, a photo of the roof and the room. We offer a survey date when we reply.
