Skylight installation in Blackheath: what is involved?
Skylight installation in Blackheath means survey, supply and fit — new openings, extensions and fit-only work. We cover the SE3 district and the rest of Greater London, with a survey before any price is fixed.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces with narrow side returns are typical of much of London, and a glass roof or long flat rooflight is the usual way to keep the back rooms bright once the return is built over. Skylight installation suits new extensions, new openings and fit-only jobs.
We work across Greater London, including Blackheath, and in neighbouring towns such as Greenwich and Catford. Access, parking and how the glass reaches the roof are all checked at the survey.

Planning, building control and Blackheath
In England a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development under Class C if it projects no more than 150 mm beyond the roof slope and sits no higher than the ridge. Listed buildings need listed building consent, flats have no householder permitted development rights, and an Article 4 direction can remove the rights in some conservation areas.
Under Approved Document L, a rooflight added to an English home must achieve at least 2.2 W/m²K (horizontal plane), and a roof window 1.4 W/m²K or Window Energy Rating Band B. The Future Homes and Buildings Standards, published in March 2026, apply from 24 March 2027 and keep the 2.2 W/m²K limit for rooflights.

How the job runs
- Tell us what you have. Send the SE3 postcode, a rough size and a couple of photos.
- Measure and check. A surveyor visits Blackheath, measures and checks structure and access.
- Fixed quote. Product, work and price in writing — nothing is ordered until you agree.
- Installation day. Usually one day into a prepared opening, longer for new openings.

Skylight installation in Blackheath: questions
Do you work with builders?
Yes — on new extensions we fit to the builder's programme once the upstand or roof is ready.
Do you fit rooflights bought elsewhere?
Yes. We check the product and the opening first, and our workmanship terms cover the fitting rather than the product.
Who handles building control?
We tell you which route applies — building control approval, a building warrant in Scotland, or in England and Wales self-certification by a registered competent person — and supply the product data.
Is the survey in Blackheath free?
Yes for new installations. Repair visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we book.
Do I need to be at home for the survey in Blackheath?
Yes — someone needs to let us into the room below and, where possible, show us how the roof is reached.
