How we approach skylight installation in Blackpool

Our skylight installation service in Blackpool covers survey, supply and fit — new openings, extensions and fit-only work. Every job starts with a survey of the opening, the roof covering and the room below, and a fixed written price.

Rear kitchen extensions on North West semis often have small domes from decades ago that leak or have yellowed. In Blackpool, as anywhere, skylight installation is the usual choice for builders' projects and retrofits into finished roofs.

Blackpool is around 23 km from Preston, and we survey and fit throughout that part of Lancashire, including the FY1 district.

What you can choose

  • Fit only (customer-supplied units)
  • Internal plaster reveal
  • Supply and fit
  • New openings with joist trimming
  • Upstands and flashings
  • Making good inside included
  • Free survey for new installations

What to check first

  • Structural changes may need an engineer's check
  • Fit-only work relies on the product being suitable and complete

Planning and building rules for Blackpool

In England a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development under Class C if it projects no more than 150 mm beyond the roof slope and sits no higher than the ridge. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.

Under Approved Document L, a rooflight added to an English home must achieve at least 2.2 W/m²K (horizontal plane), and a roof window 1.4 W/m²K or Window Energy Rating Band B. In an extension, glazing including rooflights is normally limited to 25% of the new floor area plus any windows or doors the extension covers, unless a whole-house calculation shows otherwise.

Read the planning permission guide before you commit to a design.

Common questions

Do you fit rooflights bought elsewhere?

Yes. We check the product and the opening first, and our workmanship terms cover the fitting rather than the product.

Do I need a structural engineer?

For new openings that cut joists or rafters, a structural check is sensible and building control may ask for calculations.

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new installations. Repair visits are charged.

Will I need planning permission in Blackpool?

English householder permitted development (Class C) normally covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof plane and stay below the highest part of the roof.

Can you work alongside my builder in Blackpool?

Yes. On new extensions we fit once the opening and upstand are ready and coordinate dates with your builder.
