Sliding rooflights in Ewell: what is involved?
For Ewell homes and buildings we offer sliding rooflights: box rooflights whose glass lid slides back for walk-out roof access. We measure first, specify to the opening and confirm any planning or building-control points before quoting.
Larger gardens in much of the South East mean deeper rear extensions, and deeper rooms need light from above rather than only from the doors. In Ewell, as anywhere, sliding rooflights are the usual choice for walk-out access where a hatch would feel cramped.
Ewell is around 22 km from Woking, and we survey and fit throughout that part of Surrey, including the KT17 district.
Options we can specify in Ewell
- Rain sensor
- Electric drive with safety edge
- Double or triple glazing
- Integrated balustrade on some ranges
- Anthracite, black or RAL frames
- Lockable from inside
- Daylight down the stair when closed
Things we check at survey
- Needs space on the roof for the lid to slide clear
- Weight and point loads need a structural check
Planning and building rules for Ewell
In England a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development under Class C if it projects no more than 150 mm beyond the roof slope and sits no higher than the ridge. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
For English homes the energy rules ask for rooflights of 2.2 W/m²K or better and roof windows of 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B); most modern double glazed units meet both. The Future Homes and Buildings Standards, published in March 2026, apply from 24 March 2027 and keep the 2.2 W/m²K limit for rooflights.
Read the planning permission guide before you commit to a design.
What do sliding rooflights cost in Ewell?
These are typical supply-and-fit ranges. For an address in Ewell, scaffold, a hoist for heavy glass, or a new structural opening can move the figure, which is why we survey first.

Sliding rooflights in Ewell: questions
Is a sliding rooflight better than an access hatch?
For daily use, usually yes — you walk out under open sky instead of climbing through a hinged hatch. A hatch costs less and suits occasional access.
Does it need planning permission?
A box unit that projects above the roof plane can need planning permission, especially on the front of a house or in a conservation area. We check before you order.
How heavy is it?
Box sliders weigh hundreds of kilograms, so delivery may need a crane or lifting gear, and the structure must be checked.
Can you work alongside my builder in Ewell?
Yes. On new extensions we fit once the opening and upstand are ready and coordinate dates with your builder.
Is the survey in Ewell free?
Yes for new installations. Repair visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we book.
