Sun tunnels & tubular skylights in Cambridge: what is involved?
Thinking about sun tunnels & tubular skylights in Cambridge? The short answer: light pipes that bring daylight to halls and bathrooms with no window. The longer answer depends on your roof, which is why we survey before we price.
In the East of England, bungalows and chalet bungalows with large flat-roofed extensions are common, and they often suit a long run of rooflights. Typical uses for sun tunnels & tubular skylights include windowless hallways, landings and bathrooms.
Cambridge is around 48 km from Peterborough, and we survey and fit throughout that part of Cambridgeshire, including the CB1 district.

Planning, building control and Cambridge
English householder permitted development (Class C) normally covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof plane and stay below the highest part of the roof. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
Under Approved Document L, a rooflight added to an English home must achieve at least 2.2 W/m²K (horizontal plane), and a roof window 1.4 W/m²K or Window Energy Rating Band B. In an extension, glazing including rooflights is normally limited to 25% of the new floor area plus any windows or doors the extension covers, unless a whole-house calculation shows otherwise.
See our building regulations guide for U-values, glazing limits and self-certification.

Questions about sun tunnels & tubular skylights in Cambridge
Rigid or flexible tube?
Rigid tubes carry much more light. Flexible tubes are easier where the loft is cluttered, but lose light faster.
Do sun tunnels need planning permission?
Usually not on a house, provided the dome does not project too far and the property is not listed. Check if you live in a conservation area or a flat.
How much light does a sun tunnel give?
A good rigid tunnel on a bright day lights a hallway well. Output depends on tube diameter, length and the number of bends.
Can you work alongside my builder in Cambridge?
