Walk-on rooflights for Carrickfergus: the essentials
Walk-on rooflights in Carrickfergus means structural glass you can stand on, set flush into terraces and floors. We cover the BT38 district and the rest of County Antrim, with a survey before any price is fixed.
Northern Ireland has a mix of terraces, bungalows and rural farmhouses, and rooflights are a common upgrade when extending. Walk-on rooflights suit terraces where the light below matters as much as the space above.
From Carrickfergus to Newtownabbey, Bangor, County Down and Belfast, the same survey-first process applies: measure, specify, fix the price, then fit.
Specification options
- Integrated in paving pedestals or a timber deck
- Anti-slip frit or etched top surface
- Heated or self-cleaning glass on some ranges
- Fixed or with privacy interlayer
- Internal floor panels between storeys
- Anti-slip finish on the walking surface
- Pairs with a sliding box unit for terrace access
Things we check at survey
- Drainage around the unit needs planning so water does not pond on the glass
- Structural support and the design load must be confirmed by the manufacturer or an engineer
Do you need permission in Carrickfergus?
Northern Ireland's householder permitted development allows rooflights within limits — no more than 15 cm projection on road-facing slopes and a 0.5 m margin from ridge, eaves and party walls. Listed buildings also need listed building consent from the council.
For homes in Northern Ireland, Technical Booklet F1 sets 1.6 W/m²K (or WER Band C) for replacement glazing including rooflights. Extensions follow a 25% glazing allowance in Technical Booklet F1.
Read the planning permission guide before you commit to a design.

Walk-on rooflights in Carrickfergus: questions
Can you see through it?
Clear glass can be seen through from both sides. A privacy interlayer or patterned frit keeps the light while obscuring the view.
How much weight can a walk-on rooflight take?
It depends on the model and size. Manufacturers state a design imposed load for each unit; we only specify a unit whose rating suits the use, such as a private terrace or a busier area.
Will it sit flush with my paving?
Yes — the unit is set on its own upstand so the glass finishes level with the surrounding paving or decking.
Do you fit walk-on rooflights in Carrickfergus?
Yes. We survey and fit walk-on rooflights in Carrickfergus and across County Antrim. Send your postcode and we will offer a survey date when we reply.
Can you work alongside my builder in Carrickfergus?
Yes. On new extensions we fit once the opening and upstand are ready and coordinate dates with your builder.
