Walk-on rooflights in Port Talbot: what is involved?
For Port Talbot homes and buildings we offer walk-on rooflights: structural glass you can stand on, set flush into terraces and floors. We measure first, specify to the opening and confirm any planning or building-control points before quoting.
Wales sees a lot of wind-driven rain, particularly in the west, so upstand height and flashing laps matter more than anywhere. In Port Talbot, as anywhere, walk-on rooflights are the usual choice for terraces where the light below matters as much as the space above.
Jobs in Port Talbot are planned around access: whether the roof can be reached from the garden, whether a hoist or crane is needed, and where we can park. We check this when we measure.
Specification options
- Double or triple glazed with a structural top pane
- Fixed or with privacy interlayer
- Internal floor panels between storeys
- Heated or self-cleaning glass on some ranges
- Anti-slip frit or etched top surface
- Light below without losing usable terrace space
- Can also be used internally between floors
Before you order: points to check
- Structural support and the design load must be confirmed by the manufacturer or an engineer
- Glass on roofs people can reach must not be fragile — check the non-fragility rating
Planning and building rules for Port Talbot
Planning rules in Wales are tighter than in England for rooflights: Class C rights do not apply in conservation areas, National Parks or AONBs, so a rooflight there needs planning permission. A side-facing rooflight within 10.5 m of the boundary must be obscure-glazed, and non-opening unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
In Wales the limiting values are 2.2 W/m²K for a rooflight and 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B) for a roof window in an existing house. A revised Welsh Approved Document L takes effect on 4 March 2027; rooflights in new dwellings stay at 2.2 W/m²K.
See our building regulations guide for U-values, glazing limits and self-certification.

Walk-on rooflights in Port Talbot: questions
Will it sit flush with my paving?
Yes — the unit is set on its own upstand so the glass finishes level with the surrounding paving or decking.
Is the glass slippery?
Walk-on glass has an anti-slip finish, usually a ceramic frit or etched pattern. Like any outdoor surface it needs cleaning to stay effective.
Can you see through it?
Clear glass can be seen through from both sides. A privacy interlayer or patterned frit keeps the light while obscuring the view.
Is the survey in Port Talbot free?
Yes for new installations. Repair visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we book.
Do I need to be at home for the survey in Port Talbot?
Yes — someone needs to let us into the room below and, where possible, show us how the roof is reached.
