Bespoke & shaped rooflights in London: what is involved?

Our bespoke & shaped rooflights service in London covers triangular, angled, curved and multi-pane rooflights made to measure. Every job starts with a survey of the opening, the roof covering and the room below, and a fixed written price.

London homes often run deep from front to back, so the middle of the ground floor is the darkest space — exactly where an overhead rooflight earns its keep. In London, as anywhere, bespoke & shaped rooflights are the usual choice for openings that standard sizes do not fit.

We cover all of London and the EC1A district, and nearby Pimlico and Islington.

Choices for your London project

  • Concealed or slim frames
  • Solar-control and low-iron glass
  • Sloped or monopitch rooflights
  • Multi-pane butt-jointed runs
  • Triangular and trapezoid panes
  • Matching solar and thermal performance
  • Drawing sign-off before order

What to check first

  • Longer lead times and no returns on made-to-measure glass
  • Structural support must be designed in

Consents for bespoke & shaped rooflights in London

Most rooflights on English houses do not need planning permission, provided they keep within 150 mm of the roof surface and below the ridge line. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.

For English homes the energy rules ask for rooflights of 2.2 W/m²K or better and roof windows of 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B); most modern double glazed units meet both. Replacing a rooflight or roof window can be self-certified by an installer registered with an authorised competent person scheme; otherwise building control approval is needed.

Read the planning permission guide before you commit to a design.

The process, step by step

  1. Send the details. Postcode, rough size and a photo of the roof and room.
  2. Measure and check. A surveyor visits London, measures and checks structure and access.
  3. Written price. You receive a fixed price listing the unit, the work and the lead time.
  4. Installation day. Usually one day into a prepared opening, longer for new openings.

Bespoke & shaped rooflights in London: questions

Can bespoke units open?

Some can. Shaped glass is usually fixed, combined with a standard opening unit elsewhere.

Will a shaped rooflight leak more?

Not if detailed properly — corners and junctions just need more care.

Do you need my architect's drawings?

They help. We still survey on site, because built openings rarely match drawings exactly.

Can you work alongside my builder in London?

Yes. On new extensions we fit once the opening and upstand are ready and coordinate dates with your builder.

Do I need to be at home for the survey in London?

Yes — someone needs to let us into the room below and, where possible, show us how the roof is reached.
